Bread:Spaniards::Rice:Koreans

[HAPPY B-DAY DAD...Big 5-0!]

Spaniards eat bread with at every meal. It's basically a baguette (aka "barra) and they eat it like us Koreans eat rice. So the story begins in the beginning of my journey here in Spain. My mom told me that I should bring a rice cooker but me wanting to bring an extra pair of shoes or articles of clothing I said no because the rice cooker would take up a lot of room. She said I'd regret it but I said I didn't care cuz I could just make rice on the stove... She was right, I regret the decision of not brining a rice cooker...

My first attempt: I burnt the rice... I put not enough water and cooked it at high heat
-Second attempt: The rice was kind of dry... I put enough water but cooked to too long at the right heat hence very dry rice
-Third attempt: Better than the 2nd but still dry texture. I got a little success in the 3rd attempt because I put in salt this time! haha
-Fourth attempt: I gave up and just cooked it like 3rd attempt...

So I've been eating a semi-dry rice for almost a month now...

NOT ANYMORE!!!!

I had a trip to Madrid last week from Wed-Sun for a financial/language/culture orientation and I got to stay with JEANNETE! :) It was just a great week. Lots of information intake which was an all day orientation so we basically had Wed-Fri-Sat FREEEE :). Having the rebajas right now, Jeannete and I went shopping and she got her first Euro-wardrobe! I introduced her to my FAVORITE store Bershka :) We found winter coats for 9.99Euros and shirts for 2.99 Euros and she got her boots but no purples pants :(. I even had my first Starbucks in a month since we don't have a Starbucks in my city!!!!!

Photobucket Me and Jeanneters! Reunited and it feels so good!

Photobucket She got a lil crazy with the shopping hehe

Photobucket"The bear" I was trying to convince her to buy this! haha
PhotobucketI gained so much weight after this trip cuz all we did was pretty much eat! [Classice fob shot]

So how does no burnt rice have to do with my orientation to Madrid?

Well, it happens that a good family friend lives in Madrid. She's Korean but also grew up in Bolivia so she's like me... she basically grew up with my mom and my uncles. And she's married to a Spaniard and lives in Madrid [what a small world]. Relating this to my rice story, she got a call from my mom that I can't cook rice and if she could buy me a rice cooker since they have Korean stuff in Madrid and she totally did! Not only a rice cooker but SHIN RAMYUN (KOREAN RAMEN), SRIRACHA HOT SAUCE (WHICH I WAS CRAZILY CRAVING), AND GIM (SALTED SEAWEED YUM!). Life's good now.

-Fifth attempt: PERFECT RICE DONE BY MY CUCKOO RICE COOKER :)

PhotobucketPERFECTO! YUM!

PhotobucketI LOVE THIS THING!

BTW, I have 2 roommates until June! They are with the Hands-on program. They were originally supposed to go to Wales but they had complications so they came here~ It's nice to have company in the apt :)
